An Epic Battle: The Editorial vs. The Rant
We're starting Nonfiction Month a little early to help you get a jump on your writing!
Editorials are generally written to express an opinion or give voice to a reaction about a current, general concern.  Most editorials, it should be noted, are written to persuade; that is, they would like the reader to agree with their assessment and point of view.  However, not all editorials take sides on an issue; some are simply there to inform the reader, promote an event or cause, or entertain.
 How, then, can we tell the difference between an editorial and a rant?
The answer to this question lies in the foundation of good editorial writing.  I'll be the first person to say that rants, especially on the internet, are often entertaining.  I'll even admit that some can be persuasive or informative or can promote a particular cause.  In fact, I am guilty of following a few blogs and journals just for the pure fun of listening to pe

A Brief Look at Feature Writing
We've already discussed the difference between rants and editorials, we've looked at writing reviews, and we've explored traditional news writing.  However, it's often fun to break with tradition--to be a bit more creative in our informative writing--and "feature news writing" helps to bridge the gap between tradition and creativity.
The purpose of a feature news article is still to inform; that is, you are still trying to tell your reader the facts about something.  However, instead of being so concerned with the inverted pyramid and getting in all the answers as quickly as possible, you are rather encouraged to tell a story about the subject using the facts and figures and witnesses and interviews to help you.  Instead of falling back on formality and hitting hard, you can act as if you ar

Dots and Dashes -- The Em Dash and Ellipsis
A lot of literature on DeviantART indicates there's confusion regarding whether and how to use em dashes and ellipses properly in prose.  I've misused them myself, and it's not necessarily instinctual regarding which is used when and how.
In that vein, I put together some help for those who aren't clear how it works in honor of "Back to Basics" month here on dA.
According to Wikipedia's entry on the ellipsis, the ellipsis (plural, "ellipses") is a "...mark or series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word or a phrase from the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence.
"The most common form of an ellipsis is a row of three full stops (... , . . . or [...]). Forms encountered less often are: three asterisks (***), one em dash ( — ), multiple en dashes ( –– ), and the

Interests
On the rare occasion that I get the chance to visit DA, I always want to update just to say hello to all my friends here.

Basically, my life here at the music school, when not filled up with classes, lessons, masterclasses, and ensembles (which take up at least 60% of my day), consists mainly of practicing and homework.  Mostly practicing.  I'm working up to five hours of practice a day.  A lot of people say that four hours of practice a day is all you can absorb, but I'm extremely skeptical of that.  As long as you take breaks every hour or two, you can stay fresh for a long time.  And I heard a really good musician say that you can't know your full potential until you've practiced seven hours a day on a regular basis - and there's no chance that I'm going to miss out on the chance of living up to my potential.  I'm determined to squeeze out every last little scrap of talent I may posess here at music school.  I want to be able to compete and say that I did my best, at the very least.  I have a long way to go, but I'm not going to stop working for a moment.

Since I have all my general studies completed, next semester will be nothing but music classes for me.  My parents let me drop my English Minor, contingent on the fact that I'm planning on going to grad school (of course I want to go to grad school!).  I'm so glad.

OMG guess what!!  I'm signing up for secondary voice lessons next semester!  I'm going to study with an upperclassmen from the best studio in the school.  I am sooo excited.  I've wanted to take voice lessons since I was like twelve (ever since I started listening to opera).  Next year I'm going to join the women's chorus here, and maybe by then I will be good enough to study with a faculty member.  Eeee!!  :iconflowerdanceplz: :iconflowerdanceplz: :iconexcitedplz: :iconexcitedplz: :iconexcitedplz: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Oh, I'm planning to dress up as a vampire for Halloween...I actually have fangs and everything.  XD  So maybe I'll put them on my LJ or something.  I'll post a link if I do.
  • Listening to: Kodachrome - Paul Simon
  • Reading: critical commentary on The Awakening
  • Watching: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode 4
  • Playing: Bruch Concerto in G Minor <3
